About Dhanteras:
The great celebrations of Diwali begin with the revered Hindu holiday of Dhanteras. It signals the beginning of the Tihar Festival in Nepal. The word “Dhanteras” comes from the Sanskrit words “Dhan,” which means wealth, and “Teras,” which means the thirteenth day. It falls in the Ashwin month of the Vikram Samvat Hindu Calendar, on the thirteenth lunar day of the Dark Fortnight, also known as Krishna Paksha. Though there are differences in the customs and traditions, this day is commonly commemorated throughout India. It is a day set aside for honoring Goddess Lakshmi, buying silver and gold jewelry and utensils, and starting new businesses to promote wealth and success.
Dhanteras is a Hindu holiday steeped in rich mythology, much like many others. The most well-known tale is probably that of King Hima. Legend has it that four days after King Hima’s marriage, an astrologer foresaw his death. To this his wife replied by setting her priceless gold and silver jewelry on the entrance of their bedroom and lighting oil lamps at night. When Yama, the Lord of Death, arrived to take King Hima’s life, he appeared as a serpent. But the jewelry’s shine and the lamps’ brightness blinded the serpent’s vision. Rather than perform the lethal deed, Yama climbed the jewelry pile and listened to the king’s wife’s stories all night long. King Hima’s life was thereby saved, and this day came to be known as Dhanteras. People still light oil lamps or diyas to protect their loved ones from the grasp of death.
Another fascinating tale claims that on this day in the cosmic conflict known as the Samudra Manthan, Dhanvantari, the Lord of Medicine and an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born. A vessel of nectar, known as Amrit, was brought forth by Dhanvantari from the churning ocean in this epic battle between Gods and Demons for the elixir of immortality.
In another story, Lord Indra lost the favor of Goddess Lakshmi because of his hubris when the sage Durvasa cursed him. Consequently, the demons vanquished Indra and took control of heaven. Indra, Lord Brahma, and Lord Vishnu set out to churn the sea of milk in search of an answer. In the midst of this turbulent ritual, Goddess Lakshmi—a brilliant woman covered in lotuses—rose from the sea. The sages doused her with holy water and chanted hymns. When Dhanvantari finally reappeared with the desired Amrit, the Gods were granted access to it and were able to defeat the devils once more.
Dhanteras is a symbolic celebration honoring the goodness of nature, the ultimate provider of riches and health. In order to drive away the evil spirits’ darkness, people burn clay lamps known as Akashdeeps on this day and worship the Tulsi plant. Clay diyas are lit during the evening “Laxmi-Puja” ritual, which further illuminates people’s houses and lives.
Yet another tale recounts a game of dice between Goddess Parvati and her husband, Lord Shiva, on this auspicious day, with Parvati emerging victorious. As a tradition, traders and businessmen partake in gambling or dice games to ensure that prosperity and wealth always accompany them.
Dhanteras is a celebration of prosperity, the victory of light over darkness, and the unwavering pursuit of money, health, and well-being. It is rich in mythical legends and traditions. It captures the spirit of the festive Diwali celebrations and the everlasting cultural diversity of India and Nepal.

Dhanteras will be observed on November 10 this year, followed by Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali (November 11), Deepawali or Diwali and Lakshmi Puja (November 12), Govardhan Puja (November 13), and Bhaiya Dooj (November 14)
Dhanteras 2023 Time & Shubh Muhurat:
The shubh muhurat for Dhanteras puja will be from 5:47 pm to 7:43 pm this year and will last for almost 2 hours. Goddess Lakshmi, Ganesha, Dhanvantri and lord Kubera are worshipped and flowers, garlands, and prasad of lapsi or atta halwa, coriander seeds mixed with jaggery or boondi laddoo can be offered to the Gods. During the puja, three forms of Goddess Lakshmi – Goddess MahaLakshmi, Maha Kaali and Goddess Saraswati are worshipped.
