Princess Diya Kumari was appointed as Rajasthan’s deputy chief minister by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Being a scion of the former royal family of Jaipur, she became a strong candidate for the role of leader.

Kumari defeated Congressman Sitaram Agrawal to win her MLA seat from the Vidyadhar Nagar constituency by an astounding margin of 71,368 votes. She deliberately employed the terms “princess who walks on the streets” and “daughter of Jaipur” during the campaign for the state polls.

At 52 years old, Kumari, the granddaughter of Man Singh II, the last ruling maharaja of Jaipur, entered politics with the BJP in 2013 and faced off against BJP outlaw Kirodi Lal Meena in the Meena-dominated Assembly seat.

She ran in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Rajsamand, an area with a sizable defense force presence, and won handily by a wide margin of 5.51 lakh votes. She took advantage of her father, Brigadier Bhawani Singh, having served in the army. Bhawani Singh, the recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra for valor, fought in the Indo-Pak War of 1971.

The recently elected Chief Minister has acknowledged the impact of Gayatri Devi, her stepgrandmother, in interviews. Motivated by Gayatri Devi’s innovative work in philanthropy and charities, Kumari aspires to continue her legacy.

Kumari gained notoriety in 1997 when she wed commoner Narendra Kunwar. After divorcing in 2018, the couple had three kids.

On December 3, the BJP won 115 seats and overthrew the Congress government that had been in power in Rajasthan. After serving his entire five-year term, Ashok Gehlot resigned as Chief Minister and gave his resignation letter to Governor Kalraj Mishra.

Dr. Bairwa began his political career with the student union Akhil Bharti Vidyarthi Parishad and holds a PhD from the University of Jaipur. In 2000, he was also a member of the Zila Parishad for the 15th ward of the Dudu constituency.

In 2013, a year designated for Scheduled Caste candidates, the BJP leader defeated the Congress in Hazari Lal Nagar to win his first election. The victory was achieved by a substantial margin of 33,720 votes.

In the state assembly polls this year, Bairwa triumphantly returned after losing in the 2018 results. By a margin of 14,779 votes, Babu Lala Nagar defeated him for the seat in 2018.

The saffron party’s Dalit face, Dr. Bairwa, resonated with the state’s over 17 percent Dalit population in the 2023 assembly polls. Diya Kumari Jaipur
